Although the finale of “Bates Motel” ended with the heartbreaking deaths of Norman (Freddie Highmore) and Romero (Nestor Carbonell), the series ender wasn’t a complete tragedy as Dylan (Max Thieriot) and Emma (Olivia Cooke) got a happy ending with their daughter, Kate.

In a number of interviews following the airing of the finale, executive producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin explained why they decided to keep Dylan and Emma alive at the end of the series.

“There’s so much sadness and loss that we wanted there to be one story that had a ray of hope to it,” Cuse told USA Today. “[So] we thought that Dylan and Emma deserved to survive this tragedy and come out the other side.”

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ehrin revealed that the idea that Dylan and Emma would live in the sun in the series finale came at the end of Season 2.

“There was something really interesting toward the end of the second season to have these two people who were both really outside of the Norma-Norman island and couldn’t get on it, that they would find each other and miraculously make their own world together,” Ehrin said. “It made us happy to think about, and it became something that was fun to work toward in the writing. You do try to balance it — even on a purely selfish level for your own self. When you’re living inside of this stuff, it’s very dark, and it’s nice to have strands of hope to hold onto.”

When asked whether the finale is really the end of “Bates Motel,” Cuse told TVLine: “Unless we do something with Dylan and Emma’s satanic child… I think this is the end.”

“This was a story of a lost little boy. And at the end, he had to be returned to his mom. There’s no other ending for it,” Ehrin added.
