Taco Bell announced that it is expanding the availability of its new breakfast item, named the Waffle Taco, to 100 additional restaurants throughout Fresno, Calif., Omaha, Neb., and Chattanooga, Tenn, according to the Associated Press. The breakfast taco consists of scrambled eggs and sausage stuffed into a folded waffle and served with syrup on the side. While this bizarre breakfast concoction adds another twist to the fast-food landscape, Taco Bell isn't the first to change up its menu to shake things up.

Take a look at seven food innovations that have made people say things like, “What were they thinking?” and “Why didn’t I think of that?”

Doritos Locos Taco

Before the Waffle Taco idea, there was the Doritos Locos Taco. Taco Bell took a standard taco shell and replaced it with a Doritos Nacho Cheese-flavored shell. The concept was proven so popular that it became the best-selling Taco Bell item, according to Zagat. A Cooler Ranch-flavored taco shell was also introduced along with a line of Doritos Locos Tacos chips in response to the immense popularity of the Taco Bell Item. It had many people thinking, “Why didn’t they introduce this sooner?”

Double Down

The Double Down was originally introduced by KFC on April Fools’ Day in 2010 and intended only for a limited release. The “sandwich” consisted of secret sauce, bacon and two slices of cheese between two Original Recipe chicken fillets. What sounded like a monstrosity on paper ended up becoming a viral hit on social media posts about the Double Down. The public response was so great that KFC decided to make it a regular menu item, according to an AP report.

Pretzel Burger

What’s not to love about a pretzel? It is soft, has more flavor than a piece of bread and is rugged enough to take on the go. Wendy’s took the idea and ran with it, introducing the Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger. The cheeseburger consists of a hamburger patty with honey mustard sauce, cheddar cheese and apple wood bacon inside a soft pretzel bun.

Bacon Everything

Who doesn’t love bacon these days? A plethora of fast-food companies felt the same, resulting in the introduction of bacon-flavored everything on their menus, including Wendy’s Baconator, bacon milkshakes and even bacon sundaes. For bacon lovers that can’t get enough of it, these creations will keep them satisfied for a while.

Cronut

This dessert creation is part croissant, part donut, but all delicious. Chef Dominique Ansel is responsible for creating this fusion pastry in his Greenwich Village bakery in New York City. It drew in so much hype that a black market for the pastries started up, with the confection going for as much as $40 each. The invention also inspired multiple knock-offs from other bakeries, which prefer to use the term “croissant donut” to avoid any legal troubles.

Popeye’s Chicken Waffle Tenders

If you’re looking for chicken and waffles in a form that’s a bit more mobile, Popeye’s has the solution for you. Taking seasoned chicken tenders, Popeye’s batters them with a “waffle style” coat and fries the tenders, serving honey maple dipping sauce on the side. Current reactions to the concoction have been positive, although Culturemap reports that a Houston chef may have come up with the idea before Popeye's.

Ramen Burger

Is the ramen burger the next cronut? We have yet to see, but the creation is intriguing. Keizo Shimamoto, New York resident and food blogger, came up with the idea for the burger, which consists of a burger patty with soy sauce, arugula and scallions. In lieu of a bun, it uses pan-fried discs of Sun Noodle-brand ramen noodles. The creation has already proven to be popular, as hundreds of people waited in line outdoors at Smorgasburg in Brooklyn to get their hands on this creation, according to Eater.
