Celebrity baby names run the gamut from food (Apple, daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin) to flowers (Dandelion, daughter of Keith Richards and Anita Pallenberg) to fantasy characters (Fuchsia, daughter of Sting and his first wife, Frances Tomelty). When Beyonce gave birth to Blue Ivy Carter in January, everyone oohed and ahead over the uniqueness of her baby's name and the potential meaning behind it.

On Monday, Beyonce posted a poem on her Tumblr page about blue, and sources at BET believe the poem might have served as the inspiration for the baby's first name.

The world is blue at its edges and in its depths, reads the passage from Rebecca Solnit's Field Guide to Getting Lost. This blue is the light that got lost. Light at the blue end of the spectrum does not travel that whole distance from the sun to us. It disperses among the molecules of air, it scatters in the water. Water is colorless, shallow water appears to be the color of whatever lies underneath it, but deep water is full of this scattered light, the purer the water the deeper the blue.

Some have previously attempted to explore the possible significance of the name Blue Ivy.

GlobalGrind, a celebrity news Web site founded by Russell Simmons, who is another close friend of Beyonce and Jay-Z, explained that the name Blue is a tribute to Jay-Z, whose birth name is Shawn Carter. His franchise albums have been called Blueprint. Blue contains four letters, and Beyonce has a love for the number four. Blue was also the color used in Ancient Egypt to represent the heavens. It symbolizes inspiration, sincerity and spirituality.

The name Ivy comes from the plant that symbolizes eternity. Greek and Roman societies revered ivy for its longevity and hardiness, according to information from GlobalGrind. It has represented eternal life in numerous religions.

According to Good Morning America, the couple chose the name Ivy because of the significance of the number 4, or IV. Both Beyonce and Jay-Z were born

on the fourth -- Sept. 4 and Dec. 4, respectively. They were also married on April 4, 2008, and Beyonce's latest album is 4.

We all have special numbers in our lives, and 4 is that [number] for me, Beyonce told Billboard recently. It's the day I was born. My mother's birthday, and a lot of my friends' birthdays, are on the fourth. April 4 is my wedding date.

Beyonce uses her Tumblr to share intimate moments with fans. She and husband Jay-Z used the blog to post the first official photos of baby Blue Ivy.

After being named People Magazine's World's Most Beautiful Woman, the singer offered more information about her life as a new mom.

I feel more beautiful than I've ever felt because I've given birth, Beyonce told the magazine. I have never felt so connected, never felt like I had such a purpose on this earth.

I'm obsessed with Blue, she said. And I mean that in many ways. I just stare at her all day. She is my favorite thing in the world and my number one job is to protect her, she said. The best thing about having a daughter is having a true legacy, she adds. The word 'love' means something completely different now.
