Global miner BHP Billiton (BLT.L)(BHP.AX) and large Chinese copper smelters are expected to settle term treatment and refining charges for 2009 soon at $75 a tonne and 7.5 cents a pound, smelter sources said on Friday.

The charges would represent rise of nearly 60 percent over what BHP paid in 2008.

The charges would be paid by BHP, the majority owner of Escondida mine in Chile, to the smelters for coverting copper concentrate from the Chilean mine into metal. (Reporting by Polly Yam, editing by Tom Miles)
