The Big Bang Theory
Amy (Mayim Bialik, left) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons, right) try hanging out as friends at the aquarium in episode 9 of "The Big Bang Theory" Season 9. CBS

Sheldon (Jim Parsons) has been trying to win back Amy (Mayim Bialik) all year in CBS' "The Big Bang Theory" Season 9. He came within inches of proposing to his longtime girlfriend before he saw her smooching Dave (guest star Stephen Merchant) outside of her apartment. So, when Amy suggested Sheldon and her get back together again in episode 9, "The Platonic Permutation," he jumped at the chance, right? Maybe not. Here's how it all went down.

When the episode begins, Sheldon has two tickets to a Thanksgiving brunch at the aquarium's cafeteria and when all of his friends turn him down -- Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) are spending their first Thanksgiving together as a couple, while Bernadette (Melissa Rauch), Raj (Kunal Nayyar), Emily (Laura Spencer) and Howard (Simon Helberg) are volunteering at a soup kitchen -- he offers the other ticket to Amy ... as a friend. She accepts.

On the car ride to the aquarium, Sheldon is impressed that Amy packed him Cheerios -- both original and honey nut -- for the drive. He also brings along a list of safe topics for platonic conversation. When they get into a pleasant enough banter about a trip Amy is taking to visit relatives, Sheldon decides that the list is a pretty great way to stave off any awkward moments.

"Where has this list been all my life?" he asks, excitedly.

However, they do not need a list. They have a great time -- It's "Shamy" after all! It goes so well, in fact, that Amy gives Sheldon a call after she drops him off back home. Sheldon picks up right in the middle of telling Leonard and Penny how much of a relief it is to have a healthy platonic relationship with his ex-girlfriend.

"I really enjoyed spending this morning with you," Amy says. "I was thinking that maybe I'm ready to be your girlfriend again."

“Amy, I excel at many things," Sheldon replies, "But getting over you wasn't’t one of them. I think I need to be your friend.”

Amy is devastated, but Sheldon is ready to go back to talking about the aquarium. What is Sheldon thinking?
