Research in Motion Ltd. will unveil its BlackBerry 10 OS at 10 a.m. during its “The BlackBerry Experience” launch event in New York City on Wednesday.

The event will showcase two new phones by the BlackBerry maker, the Z10 and X10, which feature a new, streamlined operating system.

With its modernized OS, RIM's new device is gearing up to compete with such operating systems as Apple Inc.'s iOS and Google Inc.'s Android.

In recent years, RIM's BlackBerry 7 OS has put once extremely popular BlackBerry devices behind the curve. As consumers have favored rival devices, businesses have been abandoning the brand. RIM has been seeking to iron out the kinks in its new OS, and the company has also gained the support of developers. In addition, RIM has been working with carriers and teasing its new hardware in several promotions.

BlackBerry 10 features a unique home screen with open apps previews. The OS maintains BlackBerry’s traditional security, but still integrates such social networking platforms as Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and LinkedIn.

“The BlackBerry Experience” event begins at 7 a.m., and it will take place simultaneously in Toronto, London, Paris, Johannesburg, South Africa, and Dubai. The live stream coverage of the event will start at 10 a.m.
