Blacklist
Red (James Spader) was fighting for his life in episode 19 of "The Blacklist" Season 2. NBC

Episode 18 of “The Blacklist” Season 2 ended with bang! It had been almost a month for fans waiting to see if Red (James Spader) – who was shot at the end of “Vanessa Cruz” – would survive when the NBC series returned. Well, Red was not dead – just yet – and was even more desperate to find the Fulcrum in episode 19, “Leonard Caul.”

Here’s how it all went down:

The episode picked up right where the last one left off – with Liz (Megan Boone) and Dembe (Hisham Tawfiq) in the middle of a shootout with the gunman who shot Red. The pair was able to get Red into Dembe’s car and drive off where Liz learned that there is quite the protocol in place for when a man with Red’s unlimited resources gets hurt. Dembe refused to let Liz take Red to the hospital and instead called a special number that summoned doctors from across the city to a warehouse where Red’s private medical team began performing surgery.

Before he was put under, Red told Liz that she needed to find a man named Leonard Caul (Ned Van Zandt). While the rest of the FBI searched for Caul, it was up to Liz to protect Red and his doctors from National Clandestine Service militants closing in on the site. Luckily, there was some live-in backup. The warehouse turned out to be Tom’s (Ryan Eggold) current hideout.

Later, Dembe sent Liz to a mysterious apartment to retrieve a lock box that Leonard Caul – whenever they found him – would need to decipher the Fulcrum. Dembe was adamant that Red never know that Liz was at the apartment and when she arrived it was not hard to imagine the reason. It was filled with pictures of Liz from her whole life – graduation photos and a hazy picture of her in one of her parents’ arms.

When Liz went to leave she was surprised to find Leonard Caul outside the door with a gun. Caul explained that Alan Fitch had wanted Red and him to meet and that he had been in hiding ever since the attempt on his life by the Cabal. Caul then convinced Liz to show him the Fulcrum.

Back at the warehouse, Tom confronted Red about all the pain she had caused Liz. Tom vowed that he was done helping Red and wanted to pursue a normal life. The double agent had been rattled after Liz had called a surgeon ex-boyfriend to help Red after their original doctor had been shot. Faced with a man who would have given Liz a very different life, Tom felt guilty about how things had turned out.

At Red’s apartment, Liz and Caul had unlocked the Fulcrum and Liz was shocked by the high-profile names on the coveted blackmail file. The pair were on their way back to the warehouse when they realized that the location had been compromised.

NCS agents raided the compound and a deadly battle erupted between Tom – who Liz had warned about the ambush – and Red’s men. Red – now conscious and stitched up – grabbed a pistol and joined in the fighting.

Meanwhile, Liz went to the Pentagon and met with the NCS director (David Strathairn). When she showed him the Fulcrum, the director was forced to call off the raid. Liz was just in time because one of the NCS agents was just seconds from shooting Red in the head.

When Liz returned to the warehouse, Red made a startling confession. He had hired Tom to watch over Liz in order to keep her safe. However, he had fired her when the relationship got intimate. He did not remove Tom, though, because Liz was already in love with him. He said he had turned himself into the FBI to lead her to a greater truth about herself.

But Liz was not satisfied. At the end of the episode, Liz went to Tom. She wanted to hear everything he knew about Red.
