The Blacklist
Liz (Megan Boone, left) and Samar (Mozhan Marno, right) were infected by the Front in episode 5 of "The Blacklist" Season 2. NBC

After two straight episodes taking down doctors, Red (James Spader) and Liz (Megan Boone) needed one in episode 5 of “The Blacklist.” The NBC drama returned Monday with an all-new episode, “The Front.” In this episode Liz was fighting to protect the whole human population when an organization tried to bring back the disease that caused the plague.

In the new episode Red alerted Liz to a group of radicals called the Front who had stolen a painting that doubled as a map to the location of a dead body with traces of pneumonic plague. The group planned to fatally infect themselves with the disease and spread it around the world. Liz and Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) found the location of the body, but they were too late. The Front was able to steal the body and synthesize a compound containing the disease from the bones.

Meanwhile, Liz was frustrated by a spy of Red’s who had been following her whenever she left her house. Red insisted the spy was for her safety and she shouldn’t be worried unless she was hiding something. However, Liz arranged for a body double to trick the spy so she could slip away and get to the hideout fans saw in episode 4.

Red on the other hand spent much of the episode trying to track down the mystery girl Naomi (Mary Louise-Parker) promised to keep secret. Red even enlisted Aram (Amir Arison) to find the girl, telling him she was important in his war against Berlin (Peter Stormare). Finally, Red’s tracker (Geoffrey Cantor) was able to find a match in an F.B.I. database.

Back on the case, Aram was able to identify many of the members of the Front before they took off on planes to spread the disease across the globe. Liz and Samar (Mozhan Marno) track one of the suspects, Chris Perez (Blake Delong), to the airport and stop him, but both were infected in the process. While Liz waited in quarantine she told Samar about her jealousy over the girl Red wants to find (Liz believes it is his daughter).

Meanwhile, Red tracked down the leader of the Front, Maddox Beck (Michael Laurence), where it turned out Beck had synthesized a cure and never intended to die himself. Red took the cure (and something else from Beck’s girlfriend that the show did not reveal to fans) and left Beck for the F.B.I. Red returned to save Liz, Samar, and everyone else the Front infected.

At the end of the episode Red appeared to find the girl he had been looking for the whole episode. He started to approach her as the episode ended. Fans will have to wait until next week to find out her identity,
