In the Season 2 finale of “The Blacklist,” Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold) sailed away into the sunset, but now that his estranged wife, Liz Keen (Megan Boone), is a high-profile fugitive, will he return in Season 3? The covert operative has already come back after disappearing twice on the show -- once after he was presumed dead, but in reality was Liz’s prisoner, and once after fleeing the country, when Liz set him free. Well, executive producer Jon Bokenkamp indicated fans can expect to see Tom in action yet again in the new episodes, but this time around things will be different for him and Liz.
Bokenkamp told Entertainment Weekly that, given the fact Liz is currently a fugitive, the dynamic between the pair will be radically different.
“Tom has been cleared, and Liz is now a fugitive on the run,” Bokenkamp said. He elaborated:
“They’re completely flipped in who they are and almost also in the way they approach the situation -- she’s now feeling the desperation of being a criminal and trying to operate in the shadows, and he’s trying to come clean and trying to redeem himself in her eyes. Tom was sailing off to white sands and blue beaches and felt it was over. What he doesn’t know is she assassinated the attorney general of the United States. When he catches wind of this, he’ll have something to say about it and will not want to sit back.”
What will Tom do after finding out that Liz is in trouble? Fans will remember that in the Season 2 finale, Liz and Tom shared a tender moment when she admitted that she feared losing him. The seasonlong battle with the Cabal had forced Liz to cross some ethical lines, and she no longer saw herself as so different from her undercover spy husband. She decided to join him in a plan to run away on his boat and start a new life. The two ended up spending the night together, getting pretty hot and heavy. The next day, though, Liz changed her mind and decided to keep helping Red fight the Cabal after all. The last fans saw of Tom, he was sailing for the horizon with no knowledge that Liz had just killed the (corrupt) Attorney General Tom Connolly (Reed Birney).
