Austria blocks von Trapp villa development

The Austrian city of Salzburg is blocking a move to turn the former home of the con Trapp family into a hotel, citing tourists and traffic concerns.

The home, which became immortalized from the Sound of Music movie, was the home of the von Trapp family from 1923 until 1938, when the Nazi's took over Austria.

Dubbed Villa Trapp, it was the brainchild of Â entrepreneur developer Marianne Dorfer and her husband, Christopher Unterkofler.Â

"Salzburg is known because of 'The Sound of Music'. Is the second most seen movie in the world," said Unterkofler, Manager of the con Trapp hotel. "The first is 'Gone with the Wind', the second is 'The Sound of Music'. Over two billion people saw the movie so far and they know Salzburg just because of this movie. So Salzburg's people should be happy that their history is shown here."

Neighbors have complained that tourists would create traffic and become a nuisance.

"There are lots of houses where Nazis used to live," said neighbor Ines Eberl."But we are not talking about the house of a "normal" Nazi but from Hitler's second in command. Also if you see the wall that surrounds the house, Hitler built it. He used to walk around the old trees. I think that is disgusting because he saved the old trees but he murdered six million people. And I think is a question of respect towards the victims not to make a tourist attraction there."

The city's urban planning committee refused this month to allow the hotel to open.Â
