50% of US workers don't turn off PCs at night, burning up $2.8 Bln per year
In a day and age
when more and more people are becoming conscious of the importance of saving
energy, it’s quite shocking to learn that US businesses waste around $2.8 billion a year by leaving PCs on at the
office.
1E Energy Awareness Campaign reported that:
In terms of savings alone, it’s possible to save over £300 million in the UK alone through turning off your PC while in the US it’s nearer $2.8 billion and €918 million in Germany.
“For example, if all the world’s 1 billion PC’s were powered down for just one night – it would save enough energy to light up New York City’s Empire State Building – inside and out – for more than 30 yearsâ€
The report shows that 50% of US workers don't turn off their PCs at night, and ironically enough, 60% of employees feel their company should be doing more to reduce energy consumption.

Well, the quoted 1E Energy Awareness Campaign just revealed a huge lack of any understanding of IT management. Workstations generally need to be left on at night to perform updates, system maintenance tasks like defragging, virus scans, etc that can't run during the workday as they seriously bog down the computer. Better luck next time, kids!
