T.A.P. Q#258 - Can I Keep Recycling References?

Dear Experts,
The references I use when on the job search have always given me high recommendations when job searching. However, I have been using these references for a few years now. Should I update my references, or stay with the ones that have served me well in the past? Also, if I do keep them on my resume, should I call them to say I am on the job search so they may expect a call?
