A closer look at the new Nintendo DSi

comments 1

Nintendo rolled out its new Nintendo DSi in Europe today and will be available in the U.S. on Sunday.

The third-generation version of the Nintendo DS console, the new DSi, has a new dual screen, is lighter at 7.5 oz and slightly slimmer than Nintendo DS Lite.

The third generation in the DS franchise was launched in Japan last November and has so far sold 2 million units. It will be $40 more expensive than the DS Lite making it $170 apiece.

Nintendo DSi will compete directly with Sony's PlayStation Portable 3000 as well as Apple iPod Touch on grounds of gaming platforms.

The DSi has two low resolution (0.3 megapixels) cameras, slightly larger screens (3.25 inches), and a SD card slot, although the Game Boy Advance slot has been removed from the updated version.

The DSi has an ARM processor running at 133MHz and a RAM beefed up to 16MB as compared to the DS Lite having a processor running at 67MHz and a 4MB RAM. DSi also has WiFi 802.11 option for connectivity.

Nintendo has also packed in a music player on DSi that allows the playing of AAC music files with support for .m4a, .mp4, and .3gp file format.

The Wii, Nintendo's console platform, has sold more than 50 million units worldwide since its release in 2006.

Twitter's Biz Stone on Colbert Report: Discusses Google revenue model (VIDEO)

comments 0
If speculations are to be believed, Google, the search engine giant is in advanced talks to takeover popular micro-blogging site - Twitter.

TechCrunch reports two separate sources claiming that Google is in the "late stages" of a deal to buy Twitter, while another says that the buy out is at a much earlier stage.

Meanwhile, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone was interviewed by Stephen Colbert last night on the Comedy Central cable television show.

Stone compared Twitter's work philosophy to Google's. "We are looking to become a strong profitable company however before that we want to improve the value that we offer. Once we reach a certain level we will look at the revenue. We will start experimenting with a revenue model sometime this year. This is not unlike the way Google approach their revenue," he said.

Could Stone be suggesting something here?

Study: Playing video games may improve eyesight

comments 0

Playing action video games may actually help adults improve their eyesight, according to a study released Sunday.

People who used a video-game training program saw improvements in their contrast sensitivity, or the ability to notice subtle differences in shades of gray, according to a study published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

The training could also be beneficial to people who have amblyopia--commonly known as lazy eye--and those who have trouble seeing while driving at night, the study said.

"Normally, improving contrast sensitivity means getting glasses or eye surgery -- somehow changing the optics of the eye," said Daphne Bavelier of the University of Rochester in New York.

"But we've found that action video games train the brain to process the existing visual information more efficiently, and the improvements last for months after game play stopped."

Lights Out this Saturday in observance of Earth Hour

comments 0

Prepare yourself for a dark night this Saturday night as the world goes into “lights out” mode at 8:30 p.m. local time for one hour.

The World Wildlife Fund is promoting “Earth Hour,” which is the WWF’s plea to people around the world to turn off their lights for an hour in order to raise awareness for action on climate change.

The slogan for the event is, “Your light switch is your vote,” and they claim that, “switching off your light switch is a vote for Earth,” according to their site. Their goal is to inspire one billion people worldwide to participate.

About 2,800 cities in 83 countries — including 250 in the United States — had signed up, according to Dan Forman, a spokesman for World Wildlife Fund.

Flickr co-founder launches innovative new startup, Hunch

comments 1

Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake launched a new startup site in beta today that allows users to figure out everyday predicaments from minor ones to more serious decisions.

Below is what Caterina had to say about Hunch in her blog:

Look. Decision-making is difficult, and decisions have to be made constantly. What should I be for Halloween? Do I need a Porsche? Does my hipster facial hair make me look stupid? Is Phoenix a good place to retire? Whom should I vote for? What toe ring should I buy?

It's dark and lonely work. Coin-flipping, I Ching consultation, closing your eyes and jumping, postponing the inevitable, Rock-Paper-Scissors, and asking your sister are all time-honored means of coming to a decision -- and yet we think there's room for one more: Hunch.

Basically, the site asks you 10 or less questions relating to what you just typed in, and it then provides you with a result or as the sites name suggests, a Hunch.

The site has already raised $2 million in Series A financing.

Fake and fellow Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield left Yahoo (YHOO) last summer. Flickr was bought by Yahoo for a reported $30+ million in 2005.

Hunch is currently in testing mode so users are required to register before getting an invite to test out the features.

YouTube gets hooked up with Twitter; rolls out new EDU site

comments 0

Social networks are becoming evermore connected as more users get hooked.

In a bid to keep up with the soaring popularity of Twitter, Google has added a few extra features on YouTube.

The share links on YouTube now offer a Twitter posting option along Facebook and MySpace. Users can expand the box for more sharing options, but those three are the ones YouTube promotes.

Clicking on the Twitter button opens a pop-up window that takes you to your Twitter account and fills in a Tweet telling your followers to “check out this video,” along with the title and URL. The URL is not shortened, but YouTube said it plans to add that "down the road."

It would be nice if Twitter could actually allow users to embed videos like Facebook and MySpace does.

Meanwhile, YouTube rolled out some other tweaks today as well with a new upload status bar. Users can watch lectures and educational videos on YouTube EDU, a volunteer project that highlights the educational content being uploaded to YouTube by colleges and universities. It boasts videos from educators all over the world who placed their instructions and other content on the video-sharing site. The videos are pulled in each day from the main site and are arranged by title or number of views.
