“Bloodborne” by developer From Software has never made rewards easy for players, including accessing the game’s first and only expansion “The Old Hunters.” It’s an interesting move since other video games don’t do this and its perfectly in tune with the gameplay of “Bloodborne,” continuing to punish players in order to get better rewards.

Right off the bat, one of the requirements to access the downloadable content (DLC) is defeating the boss from Cathedral Ward. Considering how difficult boss fights are in the game, this should be no easy task. After defeating the boss players must examine the altar in the back of the room to change the in-game time to night.

Players must then go to the Hunter’s Dream and receive the Eye of the Blood-Drunk hunter from a mysterious messenger, as noted by the PlayStation Blog. Afterwards players will have to go to the Oedon Chapel and leave through the left-hand exit to go to the square.

Lastly, the player’s character should go through the right-hand end of the square, which will then trigger an event. Afterwards, players will now be in a new area called the Hunter’s Nightmare, which is when the DLC expansion begins.

It sounds like a rough road for players, especially since some will be doing it through the incredibly difficult New Game Plus mode, but the rewards seem to be worth it. The area will be filled with new monsters to defeat, new weapons to gain and new abilities to learn.

One weapon in particular that IGN took note of was the Bloodletter, which has been described as a “sick and demented” weapon. In order to use it the character must plunge his or her chest, which doesn’t sound pleasant.

There will also be a Gatling Gun, which is extremely powerful, but is also very risky to use. The weapon runs through silver bullets fairly quickly, so players better save it for a tough boss or enemy.

“The Old Hunters” is available today and costs $19.99. “Bloodborne” owners must download a nine GB update to install the DLC, since it will come with a lot of new features for the game.
