Brian Austin Green has officially been promoted to series regular on FX’s “Anger Management.” The “Beverly Hills, 90210” star will reprise his role as the boyfriend of Charlie Sheen’s ex-wife, played by Shawnee Smith, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Green has portrayed the character in three episodes thus far.

FX is still looking to cast a new female lead after the messy departure of actress Selma Blair this month. Sheen reportedly fired Selma Blair via text message after she complained to the show’s producers about his work ethic.

As previously reported, an official listing by the show’s casting director indicated the show is looking for someone to play a role known only as “the new doctor.” The new actress must be “gorgeous” and “sexy,” in her 30s or 40s, and Latina or Caucasian. The new character is also described as a “by-the-book psychiatrist” who helps Sheen’s character write a sex study that he had been working on with Blair’s character before she left the show.

“If Charlie and Kate were like Sam and Diane on ‘Cheers,’ then you are Rebecca,” the casting notice read. “Tough, career driven, neurotic and you wear your heart on your sleeve ... and you hate yourself for eventually becoming attracted to Charlie.” Mila Kunis is one of the names being bandied about as a possible replacement for Blair.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that the series is one-third of the way through filming its current 90-episode order from FX. With all the drama surrounding Blair’s exit, the addition of Green is welcome news to the show’s executives.

Famed for his role on “Beverly Hills, 90210,” Green, 39, has been a mainstay on television in recent years with roles in “Happy Endings,” “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” “Wedding Band” and “Desperate Housewives.”
