The British currency strengthened further against most of its major counterparts in New York afternoon deals on Tuesday. The pound climbed to a new multi-week high of 1.4777 against the greenback at about 1:00 pm ET, compared to yesterday's close of 1.4575. Against the Canadian dollar, the sterling edged up and hit a fresh multi-week high of 1.8109 by about 12:20 pm ET from Monday's closing value of 1.7808. Presently, the sterling is worth 1.4728 against the buck and 1.8047 versus the loonie.

The pound showed strength against other major currencies and as of now trading near 144.70 against the yen, 1.6640 versus the Swiss franc and 0.9190 against the euro.
