A Silverdale, Wash., teen is demanding an apology from her high school after she says they discriminated against her because of her body shape. Brittany Minder, a student at Central Kitsap High School, claims she was banned her from attending her prom because of her large breasts.

According to KOMO4 News, Minder traveled all the way to Canada to find a dress she loved that would also suit her frame. The gown she settled on was purple and strapless, with intricate beading around the bust line. But when she showed up at her prom, held at Kiana Lodge in Poulsbo, Wash., on June 1, she was told by school officials that her dress revealed too much cleavage and that she could not enter the prom unless she found something to cover herself up. Minder said that eventually she draped herself in a scarf and was admitted, but she left after an hour. She said that the encounter left her feeling humiliated, and ruined the event for her.

Minder said that the dress she'd chosen was specially designed for large-chested women and should have been allowed under her school’s dress code. She added that she had worn many dresses with similar bust lines to other dances without incident.“In my opinion, I feel that it is because I'm bigger-chested and there is more cleavage that you can see, and there's nothing I could really do about that," Minder said.

Central Kitsap’s standard dress code for students, posted on its website, prohibits tube tops or halters at school, and specifies that shirts must cover students’ stomachs, lower and mid backs, and sides. It does not include guidelines for prom attire.

Minder’s parents say that while they don’t disagree with the dress code, they think that the school unfairly targeted their daughter because of her large breasts. "It was blatant from the start that the school was not being fair in how they were enforcing that rule," Minder’s father, Gary, said. "A girl like Brittany should not have to go to a dance in a burlap sack because she's large-busted." "All women are not created equal,” Minder’s mother, Kim, added.

The incident ruined the prom for Brittany. "It was tough being there after all that happened. ... I already had a blow to my self-esteem. I didn't really want to be there anymore."

Minder and her parents have said that they hope the school will issue an apology. Said Brittany: "An important night of my life was ruined, and there's no way I can gain that experience back."
