“Dancing With the Stars” co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet announced Thursday that she has thyroid cancer. Burke made the announcement in a video posted to YouTube.

Burke-Charvet said doctors found a nodule on her thyroid during a biopsy over the summer and will treat it with surgery. The nodule at first was found to be “atypical,” meaning the doctors could not determine if it was benign or malignant.

Follow-up tests revealed that the nodule was in fact cancerous and Brooke-Charvet would have to undergo a thyroidectomy. According to Brooke-Charvet, “I'm going to have a nice, big scar, right here, across my neck, and I don't get to just walk around and pretend like nothing happened, or not follow up or not share it because it's going to be pretty much dead center. I don't want people to read about it and get the wrong idea, or think that I'm sick because I'm not.”

According Brooke-Charvet's publicist, she will not have to leave “Dancing With the Stars,” notes Reuters. Brooke-Charvet's “Dancing With the Stars” co-host Tom Bergeron spoke about her condition on CBS' “The Talk.” According to Bergeron, the cast at “Dancing With the Stars” had known about Brooke-Charvet's diagnosis for a few months. He said, “I have had experience with this in my family. You never want to hear the word cancer,” reports Reuters.

In the video, Brooke-Charvet said she feels great although she was stunned by the news and it was something she “would have never, ever expected.” She said she remains optimistic and plans to make something “positive out of this negative thing.’’

Thyroid cancer is very treatable and patients have a high success rate, according to the Mayo Clinic.
