Hartsfield-Jackson International may be the busiest airport in the world, but when it comes to international traffic, the Atlanta hub doesn’t even crack the top five in the U.S., according to statistics released on Thursday by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics, or BTS.

The agency ranked all U.S. airports by the number of passengers in 2012 and said that a total of 815.3 million scheduled passengers traveled on U.S. and foreign airlines serving the U.S. over the 12-month period, a 1.3 percent increase from 2011.

U.S. airlines carried 0.6 percent more domestic passengers and 2 percent more international passengers than in the prior year. Moreover, the number of passengers traveling to and from the U.S. on foreign carriers increased 6.8 percent.

“The upward trend of international passenger numbers continued with increases from each month of 2011 to the same month in 2012,” the BTS said.

By contrast, domestic numbers decreased.
