Shawn Levy has signed up to direct Fantastic Voyage, a James Cameron produced 3D project, reports Deadline.com

Fox Century and James Cameron have zeroed in on him after a lot of big time directors were tapped initially for the project after Paul Greengrass , the initial choice, decided to give it a miss.

It is reported that Darren Aronofsky, Timur Bekmambetov, Jonathan Mostow and Louis Leterrier, all met met with Cameron, but he decided to go along with Shawn Levy.

Shawn who till date has dabbled in romantic capers and comedies like Night At the Museum (1 and 2), Date Night, What happened in Vegas, Cheaper by the Dozen , Big Fat Liar and Pink Panther has been quite a fvourite with Fox as all his movies have brought in the mullah if not critical acclaim. With signing up this movie he is planning to move into the bigger bandwidth of directorship.

Touted as a remake or re-imagining of the original 1966 movie it is about a team of scientists shrunk into a ship in an attempt to save a colleague's life. The original script will be definitely reworked to fit modern imaginations. The script is by Shane Salerno, with Laeta Kalogridis working along.

Levy most recently directed the hi-tech action film Real Steel for DreamWorks with Hugh Jackman. He also set up a feature version of the Spike TV series Deadliest Warrior at Fox.
