FXstreet.com (Barcelona) - Canadian retail sales have posted a 0.6% increase in December on the back of a strong increase on auto sales, in the third increase of the last four months, which has contributed to make 2007 the best year for retail sales since 2002.
The 3.2% increase on sales in the automotive sector has been the major contributor to December's figures, excluding car and car parts, sales of all other products have decreased 0.4%. The largest declines have been posted in clothing and accessories, (-2.7%) miscellaneous retailers (-1.2%), furniture, home furnishings and electronics stores (-1.1%) and food and beverage stores (-0.8%). Building and outdoor home supplies stores also posted a dip (-1.2%).
In the whole 2007, retail sales have increased 5.8% over 2006.
