Moonrise Kingdom, director Wes Anderson's quirky tale of a young couple that decides to run away together, opened the 65th Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday.

Anderson is known for his films that feature off-the-wall characters -- The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou -- and the trailer for Moonrise Kingdom promises a similar flavor.

The main characters are played by relative newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward. They are joined by veteran actors Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton and Bruce Willis.

Adding to the quirkiness of it all are the costumes. Gilman's character is part of the so-called Khaki Scouts (a play on the Boy Scouts), and his troop leader is played by Edward Norton, whose uniform lets him show off a lot more leg than fans might have expected.

Moonrise Kingdom hits U.S. theaters on May 25.
