Video game publisher Capcom has announced that all six of its original “Mega Man” games will be headed to iOS and Android devices in January of next year. Each game will cost $1.99 from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

“The Blue Bomber's original adventures are finally making their way to iOS and Android. These lovingly-crafted adaptations will remind long-time fans and introduce newcomers to what made the Mega Man such a popular and iconic character,” Capcom said in its Unity blog post.

All six games were originally for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) with the first “Mega Man” title being released way back in 1987, while the sixth installment came out in 1993. The “Mega Man Mobile” games will still come in all of its 8-bit glory, but it will be optimized to perform and look good on high-resolution displays. The games will not be the mobile versions of the Legacy Collection for the PlayStation 4, Capcom confirmed to Eurogamer.

The announcement of the “Mega Man” franchise heading to smartphones and tablets is a huge surprise for many. Capcom hasn’t released a new entry for the main franchise since 2010's “Mega Man X.” The publisher did release the spin-off “Rockman Xover” back in 2012, but it featured a new protagonist and was only available for iOS devices in Japan.

It’s possible that Capcom’s returning interest in the “Mega Man” franchise was brought about by the current trend of re-releasing older properties to new platforms for nostalgic fans, as pointed out by Android Police. Nintendo has seen some success with releasing the mini version of the NES console, as well as dipping into mobile gaming with “Pokemon GO” and the just-released “Super Mario Run.”

Capcom hasn’t revealed an exact release date for the games, but fans can sign up and pre-register on the company’s website to get notified as soon as they are available.
