Youthful state governor Henrique Capriles won Venezuela's opposition primary, a senior campaign ally said on Sunday.

Asked by reporters whether Capriles had won, opposition colleague Leopoldo Lopez replied: Yes, of course, he won well.

Capriles, 39, will hope his record running Miranda state helps him counter President Hugo Chavez's massive state spending ahead of the presidential poll on October 7.
