The Cardinals have just freed Adam Kennedy.

The St. Louis Cardinals on Monday released the team's second baseman, in a press release from the team it announced that the team has requested waivers on Kennedy that will expire on Wednesday, at which time he will become an unrestricted free agent

Kennedy signed a three-year, $10 million contract in December November 28, 2006 but his playing time dwindled in the second half of last season and he expressed a desire to be traded after losing his starting job.

The Cardinals are required to pay the remainder of Kennedy's contract as provision for his released. Kennedy is owed $4 million in 2009, the final season of a three-year contract with St. Louis.

The move leaves the Cardinals with a handful of middle infield candidates among them are Brendan Ryan, Brian Barden, Joe Thurston and Jarrett Hoffpauir.
