Quarterback Cam Newton has been selected by the Carolina Panthers as the No.1 pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

The 6-foot-5, 248 pound Newton was born on May 11, 1989 in College Park, Georgia.

He has won the Heisman Trophy and led Auburn University to a win over Oregon in the BCS National Championship Game.

He set the single-season Tigers records for passing touchdowns (30), most rushing scores (20), most rushing yards by a quarterback (1,473), and most total yards of offense (4,327).

He now joins the Panthers, a team with a new coach in Ron Rivera and new offensive coordinator in Rob Chudzinski.

Newton's selection marked the third straight draft in which a quarterback was taken with the first pick.
