NYSE Jan 2012
NYSE. Reuters.

As earnings season continues, investors will hear from a handful of technology and energy companies reporting their fourth-quarter earnings results this week.

Of the 147 S&P 500 companies that have reported earnings so far, 68 percent have beaten expectations, according to Thomson Reuters data. Since 1994, 62 percent of companies have topped expectations, while the average over the past four quarters stands at 65 percent.

Meanwhile, many companies in the index are reporting lower revenue growth outside of the U.S. for the last three months of 2012 due to weak economic growth in Europe and less favorable foreign exchange rates.

In terms of emerging markets (chiefly China), a number of companies appear to be seeing improving conditions, and believe this trend will continue in 2013. Companies have also commented on the impact on fourth-quarter earnings of the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy and the fiscal policy uncertainty coming from Washington, D.C., said FactSet analyst John Butters.

Companies in the technology sector that are scheduled to report this week include Amazon.com, Facebook, Yahoo, Seagate Technology, Broadcom, Qualcomm and EMC.

Several major coal, oil and gas companies are slated to report quarterly results, including Exxon Mobil, ConocoPhillips, Marathon Petroleum Murphy Oil, National Oilwell Varco, Peabody Energy and Hess.

Other big names that will be reporting this week include Caterpillar, Boeing, Ford, UPS, Pfizer, Eli Lilly, Merck and Mastercard.
