Nikon has unveiled its D4 professional DSLR camera which is the ultimate in versatility and functionality on Friday. The camera will also be exhibited at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2012, scheduled to kick off next Tuesday in Las Vegas.

As the new flagship model in Nikon's lineup of DSLR cameras, D4 is designed for news, sports, and action photographers and boasts of powerful features. Predictably, the current D3s might be replaced for sports and action photography, whereas D3x might remain as the high-resolution option for studio shooters.

The D4 boasts of new Nikon FX-format CMOS image sensor (imaging size of 36.0 x 23.9 mm) and the latest image-processing engine EXPEED 3, which makes the latest camera produce superior image quality, rich in detail and excellent high-speed performance.

It also has its Nikon-developed 16.2-megapixel FX sensor, firing at 10 full resolution frames per second. Even under a broad range of lighting conditions, ranging from ISO 50 to ISO 204800, the camera can offer superior image quality.

A familiar pentaprism viewfinder with 100% coverage adds brilliance to the D4. And even when the users are shooting through the optical viewfinder, they can detect and properly expose up to 16 faces with ease.

D4 allows shooters to choose different formats such as JPEG, .NEF RAW files, or a more compressed RAW file to save their photos, thereby allowing for post production freedom.

According to Nikon, there are two dual card slots - one is UDMA-7 CF compatible CompactFlash memory cards and the other is new XQD format of cards. No wonder the camera boasts of high speed data management both in shooting and post production.

If you are a professional photographer, there are some new functions supporting a more efficient workflow that would appeal to you. For instance, a function allows users to add IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council) information to images.

All in all, D4 is made for professional and prosumers with a $6,000 price tag (body-only).
