Beginning Jan. 10 and lasting until Jan. 13, the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas will officially kick off the year in tech, and give the world a preview of the must-have devices coming out this year.

With so many vendors and manufacturers in one place, there will be no shortage of product launches and sneak peaks, but there are a few trends that will likely be followed. Many of the devices shown will be a few months off from widespread sale and distribution. That's by design, however, because companies like Sony, Canon and LG use the annual CES to get people excited about new gadgets and next-generation technology.

Trying to cipher which items are for real and which items are hype, though, is not always easy. In 2010, the 3D HDTV dominated the show, and only two years later, people are not buying them in droves. This year, one of the major developments is Microsoft's planned exit from the show. They've announced they will not show up after this year. Start the slideshow to see 10 expected things from CES 2012.

Tell us in the comments if you're going to the show or if you've been in the past or plan to attend in the future.
