It proved to be a dramatic final night in the Champions League group phase, chiefly down to events in Group F in which Napoli captured a 2-0 victory over Arsenal, but became the first team in the competition’s history to be eliminated having amassed 12 points. Only a late winner from last season’s finalists Borussia Dortmund sent the Italian side into the Europa League.

Meanwhile, Arsenal dropped into second place in the group and could now face an unenviable task when the draw for the Round of 16 is made on Monday. Having faced ties against Barcelona, Milan and Bayern Munich in the past three seasons after finishing second, manager Arsene Wenger must now be wary of another stern test and exiting in the first knockout round for a third straight year.

The draw will see the eight group winners, which include Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid, taking on one of the runners-up, which count among their ranks seven-time European Cup winner Milan, who survived with 10 men to claim a vital point against Ajax on Wednesday. The only permutations are that teams from the same country or who were in the same group cannot meet.

The scenario looks favorable for English group toppers Manchester United and Chelsea, who will avoid arguably the pick of the second-placed teams, Arsenal and Manchester City. In terms of points tally, the two Madrid clubs, Real and Atletico, were the most impressive of the group stage, dropping just two points. In sharp contrast to Napoli, Zenit progressed despite amassing just six points and recording only a solitary victory.
