Charles Ramsey says he became a better person after he was arrested for domestic violence.

The Cleveland resident became an overnight hero Monday when he put down his McDonald's meal to help rescue three young women who had been held captive in a neighboring house for 10 years, but it wasn’t long before the media began to dig into Ramsey’s past.

According to TMZ, he’s not ashamed the news was uncovered by the Smoking Gun, because he has made amends with his ex-wife, Rochelle, for the incidents, which led to his arrests from 1997 to 2003.

Ramsey told the celebrity news site: "I've made amends with the people involved, and we've all moved on and grown up. Those incidents helped me become the man I am today and are the reason why I try to help the community as much as I can ... including those women. If I had so much hatred for women, I would have minded my own business this week and walked away instead of risking my life to save someone else."

Ramsey’s former wife told TMZ the two were on an “OK basis” and that he had apologized for his actions. Maybe she’ll be running into his arms now that Ramsey has become a national hero and Internet sensation.

The Cleveland man endeared himself to many with the frank statement, “I knew something was wrong when a little pretty white girl came running into a black man’s arms. I said, ‘Something is wrong here.’”

Ramsey helped free Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight from their alleged captor, Ariel Castro. Castro was arraigned Thursday on charges of four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. His bail has been set at $8 million.
