  • Chelsea are interested in signing Real Madrid left-back Reguilon
  • Everton have already made a bid for the 23-year-old player
  • Reguilon is currently on loan at Seville

Chelsea have reportedly joined Everton in the race to sign Real Madrid’s Sergio Reguilon, who is currently on loan at Seville.

Last week, Everton made an official bid of $23 million for Reguilon, who is Real Madrid’s academy product. After making 14 appearances for Los Blancos’ first-team in 2018-19, Reguilon was sent out on loan to Seville last summer.

In as many as 34 competitive appearances, the 23-year-old left-back was impressive as he played a key part in Seville’s fourth-place finish in the La Liga that secured them the Champions League spot for the next campaign.

According to a report in Sky Sports, Chelsea are expected to eclipse Everton’s $23 million bid for Reguilon in the ongoing summer transfer window. With neither Marcos Alonso nor Emerson Palmieri making a difference at Chelsea’s backline, boss Frank Lampard is looking to strengthen his defense further ahead of the new campaign.

Chelsea’s sudden interest in Reguilon has raised concerns over their deal with Leicester City for England left-back Ben Chilwell. Leicester City reportedly are open to accepting offers lesser than their initial demand of $104 million for Chilwell – even then, the two Premier League sides have failed to reach an agreement on repetitive attempts.

It is understood that even though Real Madrid rate Reguilon highly, they already have enough options for left-back and harshly need funds amid their financial crisis that has hit them due to the coronavirus pandemic. It is understood that even if Reguilon is given an option to stay at Santiago Bernabeu, the 23-year-old would want to leave. He would not want to fight Ferland Mendy for a starting position knowing he would receive ample opportunities elsewhere.

Chelsea recently made an expensive signing when they spent $62 million for RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner, who was earlier tipped to be heading to Liverpool FC. However, The Reds withdrew from the transfer at the last moment because of the player’s high transfer fee. The Blues also signed Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech for $51 million.

Lampard’s side now are heavily linked to Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz, whose transfer fee is expected to be around $94 million.
