Nvidia, a designer of microchips for smartphones and PCs, said its chief financial officer will step down effective March 17 for personal reasons.

Nvidia said David White will be replaced by corporate controller Karen Burns, but White will remain onboard until the end of May to ensure a smooth transition.

From June to August 31, White will serve as a consultant reporting directly to CEO Jen-Hsun Huang.

Nvidia's shares were down 2.6 percent at $17.25 in after-hours trading, after closing down nearly 3 percent at $17.66.
