Chrysler Recalls 469,000 Jeep SUVs

SUV Can Switch To Neutral Without Warning

  on

Today, Chrysler announced a recall of 469,000 Jeep SUVs worldwide because they  can shift into neutral on startup without the driver's knowledge.

United States safety regulators said cracks in one of the vehicle's circuit boards can cause a faulty signal to be generated as the vehicles are initially powered on, the A.P. reported

Two vehicles are affected by this recall: Jeep Cherokees manufactured between 2005 and 2010 and Jeep Commanders made between 2006 and 2010. Vehicles that are in neutral can roll away easily, especially if they are parked on a hill. Chrysler said the issue resulted in 26 crashes and two injuries.

Chrysler will contact owners of qualifying SUVs, and repairs will be made by dealers through software updates.

According to the A.P., the Chrysler notified the National Highway Traffic Administration that it has been investigating this issue since January 2012, when an SUV rolled away from a customer after being started remotely.
