Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer said Tuesday he was the victim of fake news and gave a document to the Capitol Police, which contained details about a false sexual harassment claim by a former employee.

This was an attempt to undermine and malign a news organization and a senator respectively, according to a report by Axios Media. The report stated this was the result of an amplified atmosphere where numerous charges of sexual assault and misconducts were being filed and the news reporters have become the targets of fake news.

The report further added a 13-page password protected PDF document was sent to various media outlets including Axios. The document was named "Schumer_Complaint" and the date on it was 2012. The document looked like a lawsuit that was filed in a U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

One of the notable aspects of the document was that no lawyer for the staffer, who allegedly filed the complaint, was named. The woman who was named in the document was a legislative staffer for Schumer from 2009-12 and is presently a career employee of the federal government.

The staffer, who asked to remain anonymous, said, “The claims in this document are completely false, my signature is forged, and even basic facts about me are wrong. I have contacted law enforcement to determine who is responsible. I parted with Senator Schumer's office on good terms and have nothing but the fondest memories of my time there. ”

She added she was not the author of the document and the charges in it are false. She claimed she didn’t not know about the document until Axios took it to Schumer’s office for a comment on the matter.

According to the report, Matt House, the communications director for Schumer said, “The document is a forged document and every allegation is false. We have turned it over to the Capitol Police and asked them to investigate and pursue criminal charges because it is clear the law has been broken. … We believe the individual responsible for forging the document should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law to prevent other malicious actors from doing the same.”

A source who is close to Schumer said the document was full of errors.

“The document contains an allegation of inappropriate behavior on Sept. 16, 2011 in Washington, but Schumer was in New York City. … It contains an allegation of inappropriate behavior by Schumer on Aug. 25, 2011 in Washington, but Schumer was in France,” the source said.

In a recent case of Schumer becoming a victim of fake news, on Dec. 8, a website by the name of the “America’s Last Line of Defense” published an article, which claimed Schumer’s daughter opened up about her father’s supposed affair with a high school cheerleader.

According to the article, Schumer’s daughter Lisa said, “My dad is being a hypocrite and that’s why I’m speaking out. When I was in high school he dated my best friend Rebecca and even got her pregnant twice. He paid for her abortions twice and spent a ton of money on her at Steak and Shake and Victoria’s Secret. She fell in love with him and he broke her heart. My Mom paid her to be quiet and go away. Three years later she committed suicide.”

But according to report by Snopes, an online fact-checking website, this story was fake as Schumer did not have a daughter who went by the name of Lisa. Schumer has two daughters named Jessica and Alison.

The report stated many people misunderstood the website as a real news account. It added the news regarding Schumer’s alleged affair originated from the website which on its disclaimer said their content was fictional in nature.
