Cisco Systems said Tuesday it appointed former Motorola head of technology chief Padmasree Warrior as its chief technology officer on Tuesday.

Warrior, 47, will report to Chairman and Chief Executive John Chambers.

She is a technology visionary, an excellent leader with a strong industry voice and business acumen, and we are thrilled to welcome her to our leadership team, he said in a statement.

Warrior's experience with Motorola included work on semiconductors and wireless communication technology.

Warrior resigned from Motorola on Monday, after Friday's announcement that Chief Executive Officer Ed Zander would be stepping down. Chief Operating Officer Greg Brown will be taking his place in January.

She said that the move was independent of any management changes at Motorola.
