Despite cold winds and gloomy skies, temperatures soared over the weekend at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Indio, Calif. Crowds put aside their inhibitions and danced in rapture to the tunes of their favorite musicians.

Fans who gathered in thousands at the event's campgrounds donned typical festival attire of shorts, bikinis and sandals in anticipation of the festival, USA Today said. It was, however, a completely different scene the previous night on Friday, with the festival-goers making a fashion statement out of garbage bags and blankets to fight off rains.

The three-day music extravaganza, which kicked off on April 13 at Indio's Empire Polo Club in Calif., saw some of the best performances by the Arctic Monkeys, Radio Head, Black Keys, James, Jarvis Cocker of Pulp and several other famed punk and electronic dance artists.

Here's a look at some of the scenes of the Coachella music event held in 2012.
