Commodities were broadly higher today, with crude for November delivery advancing more than 3% to close near the $83 mark. Officially, November crude added $2.58 to finish at $82.88 per barrel after tagging an intraday high of $83. Other commodities were also higher, as October heating oil rose 6.95 cents, or 3.2%, to finish at $2.2521 per gallon, and October reformulated gasoline surged 6.65 cents, or 3%, to close at $2.0939 per gallon.

Turning to metals, gold futures were bolstered by the surge in crude prices. Gold for December delivery rose $4.40 to close at $739.90 an ounce, off slightly from an intraday high of $743. Other metals prices also posted gains, with December silver gaining 10 cents to close at $13.645 an ounce, and December copper added 3.40 cents to finish at $3.6480 per pound.
