“Community” Season 6 left behind an important actor in the move to the Internet: Yvette Nicole Brown. However, it looks like Brown will return to the comedy series for the Season 6 finale.
Brown played Shirley for five seasons on “Community,” but when the show moved from NBC to Yahoo, she had to say goodbye. The decision to leave was a personal one. “My dad needs daily care, and he needs me,” Brown told TV Guide in September. “The idea of being away 16 hours a day for five months, I couldn't do it. It was a difficult decision for me to make, but I had to choose my dad.”
In March, Brown told TV Line she would be open to coming back if the schedule could be less strenuous. Brown has since appeared on CBS’s “The Odd Couple” because the hours of the sitcom allowed her to spend enough time at home.
Brown has maintained she is open to returning to “Community” in the future. “There was no animosity or hate on my side or from Sony or [series creator] Dan Harmon,” Brown said. “When the movie happens, because I have complete faith in ‘Community’ fans -- they are not going to get this sixth season and not get this movie -- I will hopefully be invited to take part, and I will happily do that.”
“Community” apparently figured out a way to work around Brown’s schedule for an episode. Yahoo lists her as a guest star in the synopsis for the “Community” Season 6 finale, titled “Emotional Consequences of Broadcast Television.” The synopsis reads: “As their sixth year at Greendale draws to a close, Abed [Danny Pudi] asks everyone to imagine pitching a TV show about what they would do in Season 7.” Also guest starring are Paget Brewster, Keith David and Seth Green.
It isn’t clear if Brown’s character Shirley will appear in one of the character’s imaginary Season 7 or if she’ll actually return. Shirley’s absence was explained in the Season 6 premiere as being similar to Brown’s situation. Shirley moved to Atlanta to take care of her ailing father and became a personal chef.
Fans can see Brown’s return in the “Community” Season 6, episode 13, which will be available on Yahoo Screen on Tuesday, June 2.
