End of the World movie '2012' breaks box office record, Sony says

After its U.S. debut,  apocalyptic film "2012" made history becoming the highest worldwide opening ever for an original movie (not based on a franchise, brand or hit novel), according to Sony Entertainment.

The movie drove $65 million in ticket sales in the United States and brought in $225 million worldwide, the Associated Press reports.

The film is about  the year 2012 when the Mayas predicted the he world will end.  It is directed by Roland Emmerich, who also directed "Independence Day" and "The Day after Tomorrow."  The film stars John Cusack, Oliver Platt and Amanda Peet.

The movie, which was made with reported $200 million budget, features impressive special effects, according to film critics. It has been ranked among the best of its genre.
