The o2 Diet

The O2 Diet, by nutritionist Keri Glassman, is actually about anti-oxidants. New York based Glassman wrote the Snack Factor Dietback in 2007 - which was essentially an approach based on eating 5 meals a day.

The new diet is based around a food's anti-oxidant levels.

Keri's diet is based on the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) scale, a calculus developed by the USDA that measures how well a food protects against free radicals, the culprits behind many forms of cancer, heart disease, and symptoms of aging.

Rather than counting calories or other restrictions, O2 suggests a daily intake that includes 30,000 ORAC points. The book contains recipes and other food suggestions for eating a high anti-oxidant diet.

Recent research has shown that obtaining antioxidants via supplements maynot be helpful, and is possibly harmful to diabetics. This is another reminder to eat whole foods, rather than focusing on the components that make up a food. To this end, the O2 diet is a good idea - but will it make you "healthy, thin, and beautiful" as claimed? That remains to be seen.
