NY-based architects Rhea White and Steve Schappacher of Schappacher White sent us images of their recently remodeled Shelter Island fisherman's cottage, built in 1904. "We bought the house five years ago as a weekend retreat. We were looking for something more modern, but when we saw this, we had to make an offer, despite the fact that the interior had many misdirected renovations over the years. We rethought the entire site, so that the property could be used year round; we added French doors off the dining room, an exterior fireplace made from reclaimed bricks from a former factory in NYC, and a pool. Throughout the interiors, we used whites, off whites, and sand colors, and used black and natural wood as contrasts and a mix of modern pieces, antiques, and found objects."
