The meeting with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, to discuss proposed major overhaul of the health system has been productive, says Queensland Premier Anna Bligh.
The details of Queensland's health reforms' need has been discussed between the two leaders on Saturday morning in Brisbane.
Based on the recent changes announced last week, over 60 per cent of funding for state-run public hospitals is planned to be taken over by the Commonwealth, thus redistributing some of the GST revenue that presently is directed to the states.
According to Ms Bligh, she is especially interested for closer attention to be paid to rural hospitals by the Prime Minister. The discussion with Rudd includes the subjects of the protection for small rural and regional hospitals, recognition of population growth and the role of local health networks, says Ms Bligh.
"You simply can't compare a major metropolitan hospital with a regional hospital or a smaller rural hospital and Queensland has more small hospitals than any other state," says Ms Bligh.
She looks forward to a future meeting with the Prime Minister and other state leaders at the next month's Council of Australian Governments meeting to discuss the plan further.
