Corrects para 2 to say that the merger deal between Atheros and Qualcomm has not yet been completed

Canadian patent licensing firm Wi-LAN Inc said it signed a memorandum of understanding with Atheros Communications Inc to settle all lawsuits between it and the chip maker for an undisclosed amount.

Wi-LAN said Atheros, which is set to be acquired by Qualcomm Inc, would make a series of payments in exchange for a multi-year license to the company's patent portfolio.

Meaningful discussions are continuing with a number of parties in our Texas litigations and Wi-LAN is hopeful that it will reach additional settlements, said Jim Skippen, chief executive of Wi-LAN.

Wi-LAN expects a final definitive agreement to be signed within the next few weeks.

The Atheros deal marks the second high-profile out-of-court settlement for Ottawa-based Wi-LAN in lawsuits that go back to October 2007.

Intel Corp reached an agreement with the company on Friday, ending all litigation between the companies on Friday. [ID:nN14279861]
