“Glee” star Cory Monteith was cremated Tuesday in Vancouver after a private viewing with his family and girlfriend Lea Michele. The 31-year-old television star was found dead in his Vancouver hotel room Saturday. He had checked in on July 6 and was scheduled to check out that day. After he missed his noon checkout time, hotel staff went to his room and found him.

An autopsy done by the British Columbia Coroners Service confirmed Tuesday that Monteith “died of a mixed-drug toxicity involving heroin and alcohol.” Just months ago in March, Monteith checked himself into a drug addiction treatment center for a month. He had been open about his addictions after battling with drinking and drugs for years. He told Parade magazine back in 2011, “I was done fighting myself. I finally said, ‘I’m gonna start looking at my life and figure out why I’m doing this.’”

TMZ reports that at the private viewing, the actor’s father, Joe, was absent because he was not invited, and was told about the cremation afterwards, which left him “totally devastated.” Joe divorced Cory’s mother Ann McGregor in 1989 when Cory was seven years old. According to a number of reports, after the divorce he did not have much of a presence in Cory’s life.

"I always loved both my sons and am going to miss Cory very very much. I'm saddened at the fact that I couldn't have been there to see my son before he was cremated,” Joe told TMZ.
