Meghan McCain fired back at conservative firebrand Ann Coulter on Thursday after the latter suggested that McCain be “murdered.”

Coulter’s comments came as part of a Wednesday blog post entitled “Liberals Go Crazy For The Mentally Ill.” In the blog, Coulter begins by saying that President Barack Obama “has been draping himself in families of the children murdered in Newtown,” before setting her sights on McCain.

“MSNBC's Martin Bashir suggested that Republican senators need to have a member of their families killed for them to support the Democrats' gun proposals. (Let's start with Meghan McCain!),” Coulter wrote, joking about McCain’s death.

The comments, which were briefly republished by Fox Nation, drew the ire of Senator John McCain’s daughter. The 28-year-old tweeted her displeasure with Coulter’s “murder” joke.

“Apparently Ann Coulter made a joke about me being killed in a recent column,” McCain wrote. “I should expect nothing less but disgusted regardless.”

In a Thursday night interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Coulter laughed off her controversial comments, referring to them as "a joke" and "hyperbole."

"It was [MSNBC's] Martin Bashir who was not joking when he asked rhetorically, 'Are we going to have to have the child of a Republican senator killed to have them support this gun bill," she said.

This isn’t the first time that Coulter and McCain have engaged in a public dispute. In 2009, McCain wrote a highly publicized takedown of Coulter for the Daily Beast. In the post, McCain described her rival as “offensive, radical, insulting, and confusing all at the same time.” Coulter responded by comparing McCain to one of Tiger Woods’ alleged mistresses, and the two have been clashing ever since.
