A San Diego-area couple was among the thousands of displaced residents worried about their homes as wildfires rage across California. When they returned to their home over the weekend, they found several surprises awaiting them.

Lindsey Jarrous posted a photo on Instagram that didn't show her home, which came close to burning down, but rather a polite note from firefighters. The note reads, “Sorry about the door and ceiling. Had to get in there to save the home. San Diego Fire Good Luck.”

Jarrous' caption states that when she and her husband pulled up to their home in Bonsall, located in San Diego County and near the Lilac fire, they were surprised that it still appeared intact. When they got closer, they saw that the front and back doors of the home had been “kicked in,” hence the apology note. Jarrous also wrote that the home does have damage, “like water damage and our bedroom ceiling being on the floor,” but that she and her husband at least still have their home.

Despite the home's damage, Jarrous wrote: “BUT we are so so so very grateful for the firefighters who saved our home!” She and her husband are hoping to get in touch with the firefighters who saved their home from the fires, NBC San Diego reported.

The couple are currently staying with family, according to the Instagram post. A video posted by Jarrous on Monday shows her wearing a backpack and with plastic bags on her feet as she walks through a destroyed bedroom. The video shows parts of the ceiling on the floor and insulation scattered across all of the furniture in the room. The caption says she’s heading to the closet “on a mission” to grab some clothes.

“Being resourceful and making light of our current situation _. I don't think we fully realize how much work we have ahead of us,” says the remainder of the caption on the video.

There is 95 percent containment of the Lilac fire which began in Bonsall Thursday morning, according to Cal Fire. The fire was one of six major fires burning in the region and authorities hope to have it fully contained by Dec. 21.
