The Dallas Cowboys kick off the NFL preseason next week when they face the Arizona Cardinals at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. Head coach Jason Garrett will be looking to add depth before the season opener as the Cowboys try to make a stronger push for their first trip to the Super Bowl since 1995.

But most thoughts around Oxnard, California, are on the Cowboys' chances of reaching the Super Bowl due to lofty expectations following last season's impressive regular season.

The offseason has probably felt like an eternity for team president Jerry Jones. The Cowboys finished with the best record in the NFC last season (13-3), but fell short to the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs on a field goal by Mason Crosby. There is added pressure on Garrett to end a drought that includes just one playoff win since January 2010.

The road to the Super Bowl may be a particularly difficult task despite upgrades to several positions and after the emergence of Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott in 2016. Yet, the Cowboys are still among the favorites.

Once again, the New England Patriots are the top favorites to win the Super Bowl at 13/4, but the betting odds get tighter after the five-time champions and the competition mainly comes from the NFC.

The Cowboys have the second-best odds at 9/1, but are followed closely by the Packers, Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks. All three teams have 10/1 odds.

Dallas' odds of winning the NFC are at 17/4. Five teams have a strong chance to advance out of the conference, as well: the Packers (9/2), Seahawks (5/1), Falcons (13/2), New York Giants (8/1) and Carolina Panthers (11/1).

Even winning the NFC East won't be easy. Oddsmakers have the Cowboys ahead of the pack at 7/5, but the Giants aren't far behind at 2/1. The Philadelphia Eagles are at 4/1 and the Washington Redskins are also in the hunt at 9/2 in what amounts to the most competitive division in the conference.

To put the tight NFC East odds into perspective, the Packers are 4/11 favorites in the NFC North and well ahead of the Minnesota Vikings (7/2) and Detroit Lions (6/1). The Chicago Bears are big longshots at 40/1. The Seahawks may have an easy time in the NFC West with 4/11 odds, and with only the Arizona Cardinals (21/10) providing much competition in a division that includes major underdogs the Los Angeles Rams (25/1) and the San Francisco 49ers (40/1).

Jones and Garrett should probably feel comfortable with some of the additions to the roster. First-round pick Taco Charlton should provide some much-needed depth to the defensive line, while the secondary received a boost with cornerbacks Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis drafted in the second and third rounds, respectively.

Meanwhile, following several off-the-field incidents, Garrett has remained steadfast that the Cowboys have the character to thrive.

"Character is critical with us, with the Dallas Cowboys," Garrett said. "We have built this team with great character guys. We have 90 players and we love the character."
