Real Madrid soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo might want to rethink his social media strategy. The 28-year-old tried to promote his CR7 Boys Underwear clothing line, but creeped out his 22 million Twitter followers in the process.

The world-famous footballer is known to use his various social media pages to promote his own business interests and attempted to use his Twitter page to drum up interest for his latest venture -- a personalized line of underwear for boys. To promote “CR7 Boys Underwear,” Ronaldo is holding a competition in which fans are asked to upload interesting “fan images” for a chance to meet the Real Madrid star in person.

“Upload your best, craziest and funniest fan image showing your love for CR7 and win a trip to meet Cristiano Ronaldo and see him play a match! The first prize covers three lucky people, so bring a grown-up and your best friend,” the CR7 Boys Underwear contest’s Facebook page reads.

The contest is innocuous enough, but a follow-up tweet posted to Ronaldo’s Twitter page likely made some of his fans uncomfortable. “Thank you all for participating in the CR7 Boys Underwear Competition—it’s been a real pleasure to see all of your photos,” the tweet said.

Ronaldo must have realized that his tweet wasn’t worded as well as it could have been -- the post was deleted shortly after it went online. However, more than 3,000 Twitter users retweeted the message before it could be removed. Deadspin managed to capture a screenshot of the tweet, which can be viewed here.

It’s obvious that Ronaldo is simply attempting to thank fans for participating in the CR7 Boys Underwear Contest, but the soccer star will probably think twice before posting a similar tweet in the future.
