“Dancing With the Stars” Season 24 has been full of surprises. The cast has been rocked by shocking eliminations and the semifinals were no different.

In Week 9, the remaining four teams were tasked with performing two dances. For the first, they were paired with one of four judges and asked to showcase a specific skill in the ballroom. Their second routine was to a dance they’d yet to perform in “DWTS” Season 24 and paid homage to a portion of their backstory.

The pairings were as follows:

Team Golden Giggles (Sasha Farber and Simone Biles) with Carrie Ann Inaba

Team Valmani (Val Chmerkovskiy and Normani Kordei) with Len Goodman

Team Shad Squad (Emma Slater and Rashad Jennings) with Bruno Tonioli

Team Lady and the Gramp (Lindsay Arnold and David Ross) with Julianne Hough

“DWTS” fans were interested to see the dynamic between Team Golden Giggles and Carrie Ann after Week 8. During the episode she was critical of Simone, suggesting that she lacked authentic emotion when she performed. Her judgements prompted Simone to snap, quipping that “smiling doesn’t win you gold medals.”

Going into Monday’s episode, viewers felt they had a pretty good idea of which team was going to win the Mirror Ball trophy in the finals and which would be going home. Oddsmakers had Val Chmerkovskiy and Normani Kordei favored to win with Sasha Farber and Simone Biles not far behind. As for which pair would get the ax in the semifinals, most thought Lindsay Arnold and David Ross had reached the end of the road.

How did the “DWTS” Season 24 semifinalists fare? Here’s a complete rundown of the routines and the unexpected elimination results:

Team Valmani

Val and Normani kick started Week 9 with a Viennese Waltz. Len wanted to see them nail their movements and perform a proper routine, which is exactly what they did. Normani said that it was “one of my hardest dances,” but she did a great job of hiding that in the ballroom.

The routine was flawless save one minor trip, which cost Team Valmani a few points with the judges. Carrie Ann praised Normani’s performance, telling her, “I love watching you dance.”

Score: 36 out of 40

Before their second dance of the night, those close to Normani opened up about where she derives her strength. “DWTS” viewers learned of her early struggles, which included her mom’s battle with breast cancer and Hurricane Katrina ravishing their home. Simon Cowell joined late in the package to discuss her eventual rise to fame on “The X Factor,” telling Fifth Harmony fans Normani’s unaware of her talent and potential.

She and Val then performed a Jazz routine, which she dedicated to her family and her home — New Orleans. They were even able to incorporate Normani’s grandmother, who shared a kiss with Val. The routine earned them a perfect score and all praise from the judges panel.

Score: 76 out of 80

Team Lady And The Gramp

Lindsay and David were the underdogs going into the semifinals and they knew it. Their repeated triumph, however, instilled a newfound hope and drive in David, who said during practice that he was hopeful they’d have the chance to dance in the Season 24 “DWTS” finals. Julianne was a major player in getting them ready for the week, using an unconventional trick to get David to keep his butt under him while dancing — lemons.

The former Chicago Cubs great and his partner hit the “DWTS” ballroom Monday night sans citrus and delivered their best routine yet. They wowed judges, audience members and fans with a Foxtrot that was high-energy and fun. The duo made their temporary coach proud and stunned the other judges on the panel.

Score: 34 out of 40

“You work hard, you have fun and you’re grateful,” Julianne gushed.

In the latter portion of the show, David’s family and teammates gathered to discuss his past. His parents spoke of his desire to be in the MLB, which didn’t kick off exactly how he wanted. David admitted that his heart wasn’t in the game and he was playing for himself, not his team.

After landing on the Boston Red Sox, he shook his bad boy persona and started killing it on the field. He later found himself on the Chicago Cubs, where he really shined. “DWTS” fans got to relive his final game, which ended with David hitting the World Series winning home run.

After the emotional video, Lindsay and David hit the ballroom to dance a Tango to “Castle on the Hill” by Ed Sheeran. David, who has struggled throughout Season 24, looked like a natural in the ballroom, which wasn’t lost on the judges.

“You are so meant to be here,” Julianne said.

Score: 70 out of 80

Team Golden Giggles

Sasha and Simone were down, but not out, after a rough week last week. They returned to their practice space bound and determined to bounce back and they delivered. Carrie Ann joined them, but before they got to dancing they had to discuss Simone’s now-infamous moment during judging in Week 8.

Carrie Ann revealed that she actually enjoyed seeing that side of Simone. The longtime “DWTS” judge told the Olympian it was raw and real, which is exactly what she was looking for from Simone. The pair hugged it out before getting to work on Team Golden Giggles’ Jive.

“I loved your comment back to us, I felt like it was honest,” Carrie Ann said.

Sasha and Simone brought that same honesty to their dance, kicking it up a notch with sexy, quick movements. The judges loved Simone’s new attitude, telling her it seemed as though she’d let go of something. The Olympian later dubbed her new persona Zoey, whom Bruno called “reckless” and “sassy.”

Score: 40 out of 40

For their second dance, Sasha and Simone hoped to celebrate the Olympic medalist’s decision to make her sport her life. In her package, her parents spoke about a time in her life when she was forced to decide between her natural ability to socialize and her Olympic dreams. Simone chose sport and she excelled.

Her coach, Mary Lou Retton, appeared in the “DWTS” package to discuss working with Simone. The legendary coach called her mentee “the best in the world.” She even went as far as to suggest that we’ll never see another athlete as talented as Simone.

In the ballroom, Sasha and Simone were determined to deliver a different kind of emotion. They performed a heartwarming and sexy Rumba with a balance beam behind them. The judges appreciated Simone’s effort and reflected that in their scoring.

“There was nothing I didn’t like,” Len said.

Score: 80 out of 80

Team Shad Squad

Emma and Rashad have consistently delivered impressive routines, though the NFL superstar’s struggled to move like a dancer rather than a running back. Bruno joined the pair in the studio to help him shake his monster hands and point his toes and it paid off big time in the “DWTS” Season 24 semifinals.

Score: 38 out of 40

After their first performance, Emma and Rashad returned to the ballroom at which time viewers got a taste of where the football pro’s drive and determination come from. In his “DWTS” semifinals package, Rashad’s family revealed that he didn’t have a lot of promise as a kid — he was diagnosed with a learning disability, was overweight and had given up. One high school football game changed everything for him, though.

After switching from public to private school with the support of his family, Rashad became a shining star on and off the field. His brother compared him to the main character in “Forrest Gump,” joking that he started running and never looked back. Now, Rashad hopes to appeal to kids facing similar realities.

After the footage stopped rolling he and Emma paid homage to his struggle in a Quickstep routine. They were on the mark with their footwork and their storytelling, though Len seemed to disagree. The often-critical judge felt Rashad was bullish on his feet and his footwork was off, but enjoyed the routine just the same.

Score: 77 out of 80

After the dances were done, the teams gathered in the “DWTS” ballroom to learn which of the four performers were going home. Val and Normani were the first to be announced safe, followed by Emma and Rashad. That left Lindsay and David and Sasha and Simone awaiting their fate.

With just seconds left in the show, hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews announced that it was Sasha and Simone who were leaving the “DWTS” cast in Week 9.

The judges looked on in shock as the cast gathered to hug and say their final goodbyes. Tom and Erin urged Sasha and Simone to gather themselves, though both appeared in good spirits. Simone had nothing negative to say, reminding fans that she’d be back to dance for no score in the finals.

Tune in to “DWTS” next Monday at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
